Photographing Italy: Our Journey Through Eight Destinations

Introduction — Italy Through Our Camera

Italy was not just a trip for us; it became a journey through different chapters of history, landscapes, architecture, and everyday life. From the ancient streets of Rome to the colorful canals of Venice, every destination gave us something different to photograph.

We carried our camera through Rome, Pompeii, Sorrento, Capri, the Amalfi Coast, Pisa, Florence, and Venice, trying not only to capture the famous landmarks but also the little moments that made each place feel special.

Along the way, we learned that the best travel photographs aren’t always the most famous ones. Sometimes, it’s a particular light falling on an old building, a quiet street, a boat disappearing around a corner, or a view that makes you stop walking.

1. Rome — Where History Became Our First Frame

Rome gave us more photographic opportunities than we could possibly capture in one visit. Everywhere we turned, there seemed to be another monument, fountain, ruin, or centuries-old building waiting to be photographed.

From the Colosseum and Roman Forum to Piazza Venezia, the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, and Castel Sant’Angelo, our camera became almost as important as our walking shoes.

But instead of photographing only the landmarks, we tried to capture what it actually felt like to walk through Rome.

What we Learned from Our Photos

Looking back at our photographs from Italy, we realized that every destination taught us to see and photograph it differently. Rome taught us to capture history, while Pompeii taught us to look for stories hidden among the ruins. Sorrento showed us the beauty of transitions, and Capri encouraged us to change our perspective and look from above. The Amalfi Coast taught us to appreciate sweeping landscapes, while Pisa reminded us to find our own perspective rather than simply taking the expected photograph. Florence showed us how architecture can become art, and Venice taught us to capture atmosphere, light, and mood. More than anything, Italy taught us that travel photography isn’t about simply photographing the places everyone else photographs—it’s about slowing down, looking differently, and finding the photograph that tells our story.
